Key terms in this chapter

All 26, gathered from every lesson.

Numerator
The top number of a fraction.
Denominator
The bottom number of a fraction.
Improper fraction
A fraction whose numerator is bigger than its denominator, e.g. \(\frac{7}{3}\).
Mixed number
A whole number and a fraction, e.g. \(2\frac{1}{3}\).
Reciprocal
1 divided by a number; for a fraction, the fraction flipped.
Common denominator
A denominator shared by two fractions, so they can be added or subtracted.
Ratio
A comparison of the sizes of two or more quantities.
Simplest form
A ratio whose parts have no common factor other than 1.
Part
One share of a ratio; the total number of parts is the sum of the ratio.
Unit ratio
A ratio written with one part equal to 1, such as \(1 : n\).
Direct proportion
Two quantities that increase at the same rate; their ratio stays the same.
Inverse proportion
As one quantity increases, the other decreases; their product stays the same.
Unitary method
Finding the value of one item first, then scaling up.
Exchange rate
How much of one currency you get for one unit of another.
Best buy
The option that gives the most for your money.
Percentage
A number out of 100.
Multiplier
The number you multiply by to make a percentage change, e.g. 1.15 for a 15% increase.
Percentage change
\(\dfrac{\text{change}}{\text{original}} \times 100\).
Reverse percentage
Finding the original amount from the amount after a change.
Simple interest
Interest worked out on the original amount only.
Compound interest
Interest added to the total, so later interest is on a bigger amount.
Depreciation
A loss in value over time.
Terminating decimal
A decimal that stops, e.g. 0.375.
Recurring decimal
A decimal in which a digit or group of digits repeats for ever.
Dot notation
Dots above digits to show which digits recur.
Equivalent
Equal in value, though written differently.
