Key terms in this chapter

All 33, gathered from every lesson.

Frequency
How many times a value or category appears.
Discrete data
Data that can only take particular values, usually counted.
Continuous data
Data that can take any value in a range, usually measured.
Two-way table
A table showing two sets of information about the same group.
Composite bar chart
A bar chart with each bar split into parts for different groups.
Sector
A "slice" of a pie chart.
Time series
Data recorded at regular intervals of time.
Trend
The general direction of the data over time.
Seasonal variation
A pattern that repeats at the same time each year.
Quarter
A three-month period of the year.
Prediction
An estimate of a future value based on the pattern so far.
Scatter graph
A graph plotting two sets of data about the same items as points.
Bivariate data
Data with two values for each item.
Correlation
A relationship between two sets of data.
Positive correlation
As one value increases, the other increases.
Negative correlation
As one value increases, the other decreases.
Outlier
A value that does not fit the pattern of the rest of the data.
Line of best fit
A straight line drawn through the middle of the points on a scatter graph, following the trend.
Interpolation
Estimating a value inside the range of the data.
Extrapolation
Estimating a value outside the range of the data.
Reliable
Likely to be accurate.
Outlier
A point that does not fit the pattern, ignored when drawing the line.
Mean
The total of the values divided by the number of values.
Median
The middle value when the data is in order.
Mode
The most common value.
Range
The difference between the largest and smallest values.
Modal class
The class with the highest frequency in grouped data.
Midpoint
The value halfway through a class, used to estimate the mean.
Stem-and-leaf diagram
A diagram that orders data by splitting each value into a stem and a leaf.
Key
The line that explains how to read a diagram, e.g. 7 then 3 means 73.
Frequency polygon
A graph joining points plotted at the midpoints of classes against their frequencies.
Distribution
How the values of a set of data are spread out.
Misleading graph
A graph that gives a false impression of the data.
